In this video performance, I contemplate the everyday life of mothers and its most mundane tasks. Interested in the ordinary expression of motherhood, I draw from my own experience to collect gestures and shapes that care work might take. Domestics scenes are staged in a playful way, however their exaggerated repetitions suggest an uneasiness and opens the questions of labour: How can something so common be so beautiful and also so hard? How can taking care of my daughter awaken so much love but also so much distress and boredom — sometimes in a span of a minute? Video performance, 2” loop, 2024

The first part of the installation (June 16-22, 2023) consists of geometric lines painted on a fabric panel. The work is a hand painted infographic, recording an entire week of breastfeeding sessions. This particular panel focuses on the second week of my daughter’s life: Each coloured bar represents a breastfeeding unit, each column a day. “What gets counted counts,” said feminist geographer Dr. Joni Seager. Here, the private experience is analysed and translated into a visual set of scientific data, which exposes the demands of care work and unpaid labour, when feeding a newborn.Installation, paint on fabric, 2024

		<description>On Motherhood&#38;nbsp;

In this&#38;nbsp; work ‘On Motherhood’ (working title), I enter a visual and written dialogue on the subject of motherhood with the curator and author Maren Lübbke-Tidow. In a ping-pong-like exchange, letters and images are sent, to which both respond with their own texts and (reference) images. Originally conceived as an analytical discourse, the project developed into a personal manifesto in which radical openness and vulnerability serve as tools for reflection. This exchange lends visual expression to the tension between the photographer‘s personal experience and artistic practice and sheds light on the structural challenges of motherhood in the context of art.

In this two channel video installation, I draw from my experience as a young mother to investigate which shapes care work might look like. Presenting myself bouncing on a ball, I try to execute mundane tasks with my baby strapped to my chest. In the juxtaposed video, I feed her facing the viewer. The domestic scene is staged in a playful way, however the repetitive bouncing of the ball and the multiplication of the body suggests an uneasiness and opens the questions of labour: The videos are accompanied by excerpts of text messages: excuses, confessions and desperate jokes sent during desperate nights, they reveal the conflicting demands of early motherhood and the loss of self.

With this project, I seek to explore the signs, symbols and myths of femininity from a historical perspective and in a patriarchal context in order to bring them back to our collective consciousness. Symbols and myths simplify the world by explaining them through stories and images. As a visual narrative and construction of reality, they create a collective sense of direction and identity for communities (families, peoples, nations ...). Cassirer claims that myth is „the phenomenon that originates in every human culture“ and that historically there is no great culture that is not dominated and saturated with mythical elements (1949). In this sense, patriarchy as a system and structure of control is also a „restricted conception of the world“ (Nietzsche, 1872) that disseminates its own symbols and images and thus maintains social cohesion. This work discusses the images that have emerged outside of hegemonic masculinity in history: the observation of Palaeolithic art — such as the vulva engravings of cave art and later the so-called Venus figurines — tells us that representations of women and symbols of femininity were the first form of human representation. What other counter-examples can be found in art history? Why and how were female symbols systematically erased from history and what influence can they have today?


This research-based project is a historical journey that finds its form of expression visually and aims to create an artistic and feminist atlas that will bring images of femininity back to our collective consciousness.Photoseries, Installation, 2020-ongoing

		<description>Feeling your touch

“Feeling your touch” is a photographic performance, which questions our relation to the Other in our physicality and body. Elodie Grethen invites strangers to create a joint self portrait with her, posing together following a simple rule: physical contact must take place. How, where and how long is entirely determined by the stranger, who is given complete control over the process and is free to arrange their body – their own and the artist’ – as they see fit. Grethen complies with their instructions, surrendering power and control over her body and the image by letting them release the shutter. What emerges from the images is a poetic awkwardness of strangers getting to know each other through touching – a forced intimacy.

The performance-video “Women appear” explores the question of the gaze and the agency of the subjects in classic painting. It revisits iconic paintings that display nudity of the female subjects for the male viewer’s consumption, with their bodies being arranged as such to disregard physical and anatomical accuracy, commodifying them even more. The performer in the video tries to reproduce and hold the poses from classic paintings without any context or indication as to which painting. It summons images from our collective art knowledge, while underlining the absurdity of these depictions by letting the physicality of the body through its shaking and contortions speak for itself. The attempt to hold still is bound to fail: the body moving against the will of the performer, thus forcing them to break with this history.
